The Music of America: African-American Contribution

February 12, 2014 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm EST

Free Open to the Public
Fisk Jubilee Singers circa 1875

Jean Speight will present a timeline on the development of African-American music from 1600 to 1950, including:

  • Sacred music
folk spirituals, arranged spirituals, folk gospel, and gospel hymns
  • Secular music
work songs, field calls, protest songs, rural blues, ragtime, boogie-woogie, and more
  • Old recordings

According to Speight:

“The power of song in the struggle for Black survival – that’s what spirituals and blues are about! Thought to be the only original folk music of America, the spiritual and the blues have had a significant impact on the evolution of all American music.”
